Chapter Nine

Matt

I don’t like leaving Jesse behind, but I also know I can’t have any distractions if we are going to get everyone out. She doesn’t mean to be a distraction but trying to protect her from everything I know she would see in this shithole would definitely distract me from our mission. Get in, get my boneheaded brothers along with Holland’s sister, just thinking about her little stunt makes me grind my teeth, and get the hell out of Dodge before anyone is the wiser. Then I would be back in Jesse’s soothing presence and all would be right with the world.

“Yo, you ready for this man?” I ask Holland, as we get closer to the warehouse. He’s nervous and scared, I don’t know if it’s for his sister or himself yet. “You know once you cross this line you can’t go back, you sure you don’t want to let us handle this while you wait here. This could mean your job man.” I know he loves being a cop, even though I’m pretty sure he did it just to see if his dad would get pissed off, but Holland genuinely loves being a cop. He’s helped us before, but nothing like this, if he goes in there with us and we start shooting, people will get killed. I want to make sure he is prepared for what this could mean for him.

“I hate that this is the way I have to handle this, but I’m in. My sisters mean more to me than my job ever did. I thought my brothers in uniform would have my back when it came to this, but they have to do what they have to do, and I have to do what I have to do. I don’t hate them, but I now understand that I can’t be them anymore. Think my dad would shit a brick if I joined the Rejects? Yeah, he’d probably shit a brick, totally worth it.” That’s Holland, the rebel without a cause.

“Yeah, I want to be there when you tell him, maybe even live stream that shit.” I’m trying to lighten the mood as we approach the warehouse, but this asshole punches me in my arm. “Hey, no hitting dude, I need that arm to shoot, among other things.” I give him a shit eating grin and he just rolls his eyes at me.

When we’re within spitting range of the warehouse we all fan out, Reaper takes a group around the back, while me and Holland head toward the front. I don’t see any men on the perimeter of the building, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t hiding somewhere. Pulling out our guns, we creep towards the door. I can hear what sounds like heavy metal music blaring through the door. I look over at Holland pointing towards the door before I pull it open slowly.

As soon as the door is open the music blasts us in the face, it’s so loud I can’t make out anything else inside.
